Where were you and how old were you when you first heard a funky record?
Probably around 5 years old in my mom's car.
Did you become a DJ then and if not then when?
I got my 1st record player at age 4 and always had a turntable and collected records from then on.. didn't start dj-ing till much later though.
Tell the Madclout viewers what it was like growing up listening to the music you heard as a kid.
I went through a lot of phases when I was younger, with music always being my dominant interest..By the time I finished high school my tastes were broadening rapidly and I got into collecting all kinds of music.
What DJ's or Muscians inspired or influenced you?
John Coltrane, Frank Zappa, James Brown,Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, George Clinton, Blowfly, Little Beaver.. and on.
Have you always collected vinyl or did you start when you became a DJ?
Always collected.
Whats the most money youve paid for a record and why?
$85 for the 1st Blowfly lp, because I had to have all of them.
Can you break down the meaning of your name and band name?
Spam allstars came 1st.. I was experimenting in the studio and did a track with a record that had an old spam commercial on it.. I decided to call the band spam allstars because I thought it was funny. "allstars" because it is a generic term that has been used often and also because there were always different musicians in the lineup.. when I started getting dj work I chose le spam because I already had the band name.. I added the "le" because I was poking fun at all the euro trash dj's that were working on Miami Beach at that time.
I consider record collecting an art form and a very rewarding one. Do you agree or disagree? Please explain.
I agree... It's a voyage of discovery... there are very few things more exciting to me than digging thru piles of records and finding some lost jewels and then getting to share them with others.
What types of music have you been hired to spin?
Funk, Hiphop, Lounge, Jazz, Reggae, Electro-bass, Cuban/salsa, African, Brazilian.
How would classify your bands sound?
Improvised music using elements of Latin, Funk, Hiphop, Electro Jazz and Dub.
If you could choose an Allstar lineup of DJ's for the Funk Olympics besides yourself who would be on your team?
(I don't know if they all would want to be on my team but..)
Here are a few funk dj's that I know of and respect... Seamstar, Superwolf, Shadow, Keb Darge, James Trouble, Dante Carfagna, Cut Chemist, Supreme Court.. the list goes on.
Describe the feeling of spinning vinyl and seeing Bboys and party goers tearing up the floor.
I would say that it makes me very happy when I can just spin funk and have a room going off.. it's a delicate balance with the b-boys.. when you have a nice big room it's great because there is space for everybody to do their thing.. in smaller rooms what happens sometimes is that a circle forms and the rest of the crowd can become a bit intimidated and just stand there watching.. I really like it most when everyone is losing it.
Do you play any other instruments?
Guitar was my gig for a while.
Where has DJing taken you?
A lot farther than i imagined it would.
Future plans?
Work on getting the band out of Miami a bit... Doing a monthly residence in NYC right now, looking to hit other cities as well.
I'm gonna list some terms and if you could respond with one word only....
