DJ Trails
"DJ Trails" | Mendez
Greeetings all BBoys,Bgirls and afficionados Madclout recently caught up with DJ Trails who has been leaving a dusty trail through out the East Coast with his arsenal of vintage vinyl.Maybe youve heard him select some funk in NYC at a Zulu Anniversary or you caught him dropping some battle breaks in Atlanta,or if you been to the Miami Pro-am then youve definitely witnessed his skill alongside the ever so popular and saught after D.J. Leacy of the UK. While our UK correspondents are busy tracking down Leacy, DJ Trails is first to bat.
What is the first record you ever heard? Where were you and how old were you?
I was a wee little shortee, livin on a farm in Israel. My father used to have a pretty big record collection of 60's & 70's psychedelic rock like Jimmy, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, etc.
Did it make you wanna dance?
I did a cute little baby chicken uprock, or something like that..
Who is the first DJ you ever witnessed in person? Describe the experience.
The firts parties I can remember seeing DJ's, I must have been like 12 years old. I would go to house parties and birthday parties and my boys D-Monik & Immortal would be playing records or just messing with CD players. They let me play around a little and showed me the ropes. I just thought it was cool that you could control the whole vibe at the party with the music.
When did you become a DJ?
Immortal and D-Monik gave up on Djing for a little while and then in early to mid 1996 I got them into the club/rave scene and they started getting back into Djing. Immortal and I were Bboyin for like a year or two but never had any instruction and eventually gave it up for full swing DJing.
What type of DJ would you consider yourself and why?
I dont know how to describe it other than, straight up BBOY DJ. I dont really play jiggy crap, unless I personally like the record for some strange resason. I would say party DJ, but it depends on what kind of party. Nowadays, I exclusively DJ BBOY Battles and that makes me happy. I like making people dance and freakin dope breaks that people arent used to hearing.
Who were or are your influences?
I am very open minded musically. I listen to Jazz, Funk, Soul, Rock, Hip Hop, lil bit of everything. Other DJ's would have to be: Jazzy Jay, Afrika Bambaataa, Love Bug Starski, GM Flash, DXT, GW Theodore, Kool Herc, Cash $, Jazzy Jeff, Leacy and all the turntablists out there. I pay respect to all the dope deejays who paved the way for me and everyone who is taking it to the next level.
In your eye what are the qualities of a good DJ?
It's kind of hard to describe, but you can tell a whack DJ real quick, if everything is flowing, the DJ is usually pretty good. I would sum it up as follows:
1. Know how to please the crowd - Music Selection
(The dopest DJ in the world can ruin any party real
quick if hes not playing the right jams)
2. MIX, MIX, MIX
3. SCRATCH
4. Rock Doubles of Breaks
Whats the most youve ever paid for a record?
Maybe $28 for a triple album set, I look for the bargains and dig hard. The most I ever paid for a single record was $20.
Would you consider yourself a crate digger or do you wait for pools to send you the so called new joints?
Pools are for swimming and skateboarding! I dont play too much new music. I dig as often as time permits. Nothing feels better than spending all day in a store and coming out covered from head to toe in dust and dirt. Its all about getting those few banging joints that no one else has.
Have you or do you dabble in any other elements of Hip Hop?
From 92-96 I used to write a lot and do a lot of fill ins and throwups. I was kind of whack b/c no one ever taught me any style, but I got up EVERY SINGLE DAY! I kind of gave it up b/c I lived in a suburb and some people started snitchin and then I had gang unit coming by the house every other day and bothering my folks. DASH167 actually did some outlines for me the other day and I'm practicing some letters so I can get back into it slowly. '96-'97 I was Bboyin a little, but same story, I had no teachers and I was better at music and visual arts so I let that slide as well. + you have to practice dancin every day if you want to be dope. I've grown into the realization that it's better not to come out at all, than to come out whack.
Where has DJ Trails career taken him that he is proud of?
Recently, I'm getting to travel a lot, mostly the US, I'm waiting to hit overseas on some Hip Hop $!@%. I'm also really thankful to have had the opportunity to work with some of the Hip Hop Legends like Bambaataa, etc.
