Who was the first M.C you heard ever? How old where you and where were you?
I honestly cant remember, my father was a D.J. and a b-boy so I remember hearing Sugarhill, Africa Bambatta, Cold Crush Brothers, Busy B, Treacherous 3 and all of that/ I heard all of em around the same time so I cant remember which one I heard first. Around this time I was 3-4 years old in Brooklyn, New York.
Did you start rhyming then? If not when did you become an M.C.?
Hell no, I couldn't even read and write yet let alone rhyme. I wrote my first ryhme when I was in the 5th grade, and by the 6th grade me and this kid from down the block started a group. I dont think I really became an emcee though until 1999 when I started rhyming more in front of crowds.
Who were or are your influences?
The first person that inspired me to rhyme was Special Ed. Number one he was nice, and number two he was from the same neighborhood as me. I wanted that respect that he got from everybody around the way. But I would have to say Malcolm X, Big Daddy Kane, Lord Finesse, GangStarr, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, and Common have influenced the way I think and look at things in life.
Would you consider yourself a Battle M.C.?If so why and if not what type of M.C. would you classify yourself?
Hell no, I would never pigeon hole myself by saying I'm a battle emcee. Battling is where you start to let people know who you are and to get respect. I dont like to be classed I'm simply an emcee who's able to be versatile.
Can you break down the meaning of Kid Kaos and Vintage Imperial?
Yeah, the kid in Kid Kaos represents my youth I'm 20 years old right now as well as it stands for Keen Imperial Dialect which means being sharp with your words. A old friend of mine named me Kaos in middle school cause I was always into something and couldn't be controlled. My partners name is SL-One and it stands for Super Lyrical Opposing Negative Energy. Vintage Imperial-just means kings with supreme quality cause thats what we put in our music and we demand respect like a king would.
What qualities do you feel make a well rounded M.C.?
Well #1 you have to have an agenda or something to say before you even start fresstyling. It also takes good observation skills and third you just have to know how to communicate those thoughts. Half the stuff Vintage Imperial would say is something your either to scared to say, or something you've thought off and didn't know how to express it.
In your eye what does M.C. mean?
A master of ceramony that moves crowds. See an emcee is a master who controls the mood, a rapper thinks they control the environment but the environment controls them.
Have you or do you dabble in any other elements of Hip-Hop?
Hell yeh, the thing that seperates Vintage Imperial from other Hip Hop groups is that we participate in all four elements. My partner Sl-One is a deejay as well as a an emcee. I used to break as a kid and I still write graffiti as well as emcee.
How do you feel about the state of Hip-Hop at this current moment?
At this current moment right now I think Atlanta has the best underground hip hop scene in the country but we dont get our respect. I'll always have a love for Hip Hop but I will always hate the music business. I hate all the people who were once underground and broke and know that Hip Hop is their day job they forgot that the underground exists.
Future Plans...?
We have a single release party on March 25th 2003, at Apache Cafe in Atlanta with this group Maspyke from Boston. On April 11th and 12th we'll be in Virgina performing at Averret University. We put out a record last summer and we a have new one out now that was well received by the world abroad. My short term goal is for me and SL-one to travel around the world performing meeting new people and enjoying new experiences. My man SL wants to direct videos but I see him becoming a great producer and engineer real soon. For me I just want to leave something for my children to enjoy.
Kid, I'm gonna list some terms and I want you to respond with one word only.
